Виды предлогов
There are 4 types of prepositions:
simple,
derived,
compound,
composite (phrasal).
Сложные предлоги (Compound prepositions)
В отличие от простых предлогов, образованных от одного корня, сложные предлоги образуются путем словосложения, например inside (внутри), outside (снаружи), upon (на), into (в), throughout (через, повсеместно), without (без).
Пример:
Before
Lewis left the room before John. – Льюис покинул комнату перед Джоном.
I’ll try to return home before six. – Я постараюсь вернуться домой до шести.
We met the day before yesterday. – Мы встретились позавчера.
Behind
The child was hiding behind the tree. – Ребенок прятался за деревом.
I left the past behind. – Я оставил прошлое позади.
I am behind your project. I will support it. – Я за твой проект. Я буду его поддерживать.
Below
There is a family in the flat below us. – В квартире под нами живет семья.
The temperature is five degrees below zero. – Температура – 5 градусов ниже нуля.
Beside
James was sitting beside Miriam. – Джеймс сидел рядом с Мириэм.
Besides
What shall we have besides coffee? – Что еще возьмем, кроме кофе?
Between
Mary sat between Jane and Kelly. – Мэри сидела междуДжейн и Келли.
Between you and me, I think she’s crazy. – Только между нами, но, мне кажется, она сумасшедшая.
Inside
Are there any people inside the house? – В доме есть люди?
Nearby
My house is nearby the parking. – Мой дом находится около парковки.
Outside
He left his dog outside the house. – Он оставил собаку снаружи.
Throughout
The students talked throughout the whole class. – Студенты весь урок разговаривали.
Underneath
The nurse put a pillow underneath his head. – Медсестра положила ему под голову подушку.
Unlike
This problem is unlike any we have met before. – Эта проблема не похожа ни на одну, с которой мы когда-то встречались.
Until
The meeting didn’t finish until 11 p.m. – Совещание продолжалось до 11 вечера.
Upon
Once upon a time there lived a King. – Жил-был однажды король.
Within
I will finish within 30 minutes. – Я закончу в течение 30 минут.
He lives within 10 miles of his work. – Он живет в 10 милях от работы.
Without
I can’t live without you. – Я не могу жить без тебя.
Составные предлоги (Composite/Phrasal prepositions)
Составные (групповые) предлоги представляют собой сочетание существительного, прилагательного, причастия или наречия с простым предлогом или союзом. Вместе такие слова образуют единое целое и не могут меняться местами или заменяться синонимами. Например: according to (в соответствии с), along with (вместе с), apart from (помимо), because of (из-за, вследствие), contrary to (вопреки), due to (благодаря), except for (заисключением), instead of (вместо), prior to (прежде), regardless of (несмотряна).
Подобно простым предлогам, составные предлоги стоят перед существительными.

Предлоги, состоящие из трех слов, обычно имеют следующую структуру: simple preposition + noun + simple preposition.
Пример:
in aid of – в помощь
on behalf of – от имени
in front of – напротив
in accordance with – согласно
in line with – в соответствии
in relation to – относительно
with reference to – ссылаясьна
with respect to – чтокасается
by means of – посредством
Такие предлоги также стоят перед существительными.

According to John, no one enjoyed the party very much. – По словам Джона, никому не было очень весело на вечеринке.
Ahead of (before, in front of)
You should have told us ahead of time that you were coming. – Надо было тебе предупредить нас, что ты приедешь.
Along with (together with)
We have to take Physical Education along with all the academic courses. – Нам нужно посещать физкультуру вместе с другими предметами.
Apart from (separate from)
Apart from his talking too much, I have nothing against him. – За исключением его болтливости, я ничего не имею против него.
As for (regarding)
As for your test results, I haven’t checked them yet. – Что касается результатов ваших тестов, я их еще не проверил.
Because of (on account of)
Because of the bad weather, we stayed at home. – Из-за плохой погоды мы остались дома.
Due to (on account of)
I was unable to go to the party, due to some other business. – Я не смог прийти на вечеринку из-за других дел.
Except for (with the exception of)
Except for John, none of us had ever been there before. – Кроме Джона, никто там раньше не бывал.
For the sake of (in the interest of, for the good of)
He treated her badly, but she stayed with him for the sake of the children. – Он плохо с ней обходился, но она осталась с ним ради детей.
From above (from a position above or over)
Seen from above, the countryside looks like a checkerboard of brown and green squares. – Если смотреть сверху, деревня выглядит как шахматная доска из коричневых и зеленых квадратов.
In addition to (added to)
In addition to his regular job, he works in a store three nights a week. – В дополнение к своей постоянной работе, он работает в магазине три ночи в неделю.
In case of (in the event of)
In case of an emergency, call 911. – В экстренных случаях вызывайте 911.
In front of (located before)
My car is parked in front of the house. – Моя машина припаркована перед домом.
In search of (looking for)
He’s gone to the library in search of some books on sea mammals. – Он отправился в библиотеку в поисках книг о морских млекопитающих.
In spite of (disregardingthedifficulty, resistance, hostility)
In spite of the weatherman’s predictions, I think it’s going to be a good day. – Несмотря на прогноз погоды, я думаю, сегодня будет хороший день.
In the course of (during)
In the course of two weeks I will have to study for my exams from morning till night. – На протяжении двух недель мне придется готовиться к экзаменам с утра до вечера.
Instead of (in place of, substitutingfor)
I wish I were going to a party instead of the dentist. – Я бы лучше пошел на вечеринку, чем к стоматологу.
Out of (from the interior of; no longer in or within; no longer have or be supplied with)
As soon as she went out of the room, I got out of bed and began to dress. – Как только она вышла из комнаты, я встал с кровати и начал одеваться.
Get out of my way! – Уйди с дороги!
Out of sight, out of mind. (proverb) – С глаз долой, из сердца вон.
We ran out of gas coming from town. – По дороге из города у нас закончился бензин.
He was out of breath from running so fast. – Он запыхался от быстрого бега.
Outside of (beyondthelimitsofanarea; withtheexceptionof)
He lives in a small town outsideof New York. – Он живет в небольшом городке за пределами Нью-Йорка.
Outsideof his family and one or two old friends, he sees no one any more. – Помимо своей семьи и парочки друзей, он ни с кем не видится
