 Грамматические особенности использования модального глагола should

Мо­даль­ный гла­гол should (рис. 1) ис­поль­зу­ет­ся, когда необ­хо­ди­мо дать совет.

На­при­мер, какой из со­ве­тов будет умест­ным в сле­ду­ю­щей си­ту­а­ции?

Си­ту­а­ция: If it rains, you should __________________.

a) wear a T-shirt    b) eat a banana   c) use an umbrella

Ло­гич­но, что пра­виль­ным от­ве­том будет ва­ри­ант c – “use an umbrella”.

Как и у дру­гих мо­даль­ных гла­го­лов, у should есть свои осо­бен­но­сти:

после should все­гда стоит ин­фи­ни­тив без ча­сти­цы to (should is always followed by the infinitive without to);

should не из­ме­ня­ет­ся по лицам и чис­лам, то есть в тре­тьем лице един­ствен­но­го числа к нему не до­бав­ля­ет­ся окон­ча­ние -s (should is the same for all the pronouns);

При­мер: I should, he should, they should, she should

should яв­ля­ет­ся силь­ным гла­го­лом, по­это­му он не нуж­да­ет­ся в дру­гих вспо­мо­га­тель­ных гла­го­лах для об­ра­зо­ва­ния от­ри­ца­тель­ных и во­про­си­тель­ных форм (it doesn’t need auxiliaries);

При­мер: I should not (shouldn’t) do. Should I do?

после should ни­ко­гда не будет сле­до­вать дру­гой мо­даль­ный гла­гол, а толь­ко его эк­ви­ва­лент.

При­мер: should can = should be able to

 Примеры использования модального глагола should

You should brush your teeth regularly.

You shouldn’t eat many sweets.

You should never give up.

 Особенности использования модального глагола should

Should ис­поль­зу­ет­ся для того чтобы дать совет или ре­ко­мен­да­цию (to make recommendations or to give advice). При этом you should озна­ча­ет, что я думаю, это хо­ро­шаяидея (I think it is a good thing for you to do), а you shouldn’t озна­ча­ет, что я думаю, это пло­хаяидея (I think it’s a bad idea for you to do it).

При­мер:

When you go to Oxford, you should visit the Christ College where Harry Potter films were shot. (recommendation)

I think you shouldn’t go out with Jesse. (advice) (рис. 3)
