 Конструкция I wish/if only в настоящем времени

Если мы хотим ука­зать, что хо­те­ли бы из­ме­нить некую си­ту­а­цию в на­сто­я­щем, то в таком слу­чае мы ис­поль­зу­ем кон­струк­цию I wish/If only + Past Simple/Past Continuous.

При­мер:

I wish/If only I were more patient. (But I’m not patient.)

При­ме­ча­ние:

После I wish/If only мы ис­поль­зу­ем were для всех лиц. Ва­ри­ант с was яв­ля­ет­ся более раз­го­вор­ным.

I wish I was/were taller.

Также для вы­ра­же­ния по­же­ла­ния или со­жа­ле­ния может ис­поль­зо­вать­ся кон­струк­ция I wish/If only + subject + could + bare infinitive.

При­мер:

I wish/If only I could ride a bicycle. (But I can’t.)

Кроме того, эта кон­струк­ция может ис­поль­зо­вать­ся для вы­ра­же­ния по­же­ла­ния от­но­си­тель­но бу­ду­ще­го, ко­то­рое вряд ли ис­пол­нит­ся, а также для вы­ра­же­ния недо­воль­ства. Она также может вы­сту­пать как веж­ли­вая прось­ба, под­ра­зу­ме­ва­ю­щая недо­воль­ство или от­сут­ствие на­деж­ды на из­ме­не­ние си­ту­а­ции.

В таком слу­чае кон­струк­ция будет вы­гля­деть сле­ду­ю­щим об­ра­зом I wish/If only + subject + would + bare infinitive.

При­ме­ча­ние:

Wish и would долж­ны иметь раз­ные под­ле­жа­щие.

Нель­зя ска­зать – I wish I would или He wishes he would

Можно так же ис­поль­зо­вать кон­струк­цию wish + inanimate object + would для вы­ра­же­ния от­сут­ствия на­деж­ды на из­ме­не­ние си­ту­а­ции или разо­ча­ро­ва­ния.

При­мер:

I wish he would study for his exams.

(But I don’t think he will – wish for a future change unlikely to happen)

I wish Jane would go to university.

(Jane has refused to do so and I’m unhappy about it – dissatisfaction)

I wish it would stop snowing.

(It’s unlikely to stop snowing but I wish it would)

I wish you would be quiet.

(I don’t expect you will be quiet but I’m asking anyway – request implying lack of hope)

 Конструкция I wish/if only в прошедшем времени

Если мы хотим вы­ра­зить со­жа­ле­ние о том, что слу­чи­лось или не слу­чи­лось в про­шлом, мы ис­поль­зу­ем кон­струк­цию I wish/If only + Past Perfect.

При­мер:

I wish/If only I had gone to Ann’s party last night. (But I didn’t.)

I wish и If only си­но­ни­мич­ны по зна­че­нию, хотя If only имеет от­те­нок боль­шей дра­ма­тич­но­сти.

You are leaving for the airport. You can’t find your passport.

You live in the suburbs. You prefer the city centre.

You argued with your friend yesterday. Today she is upset.

You didn’t clean your bedroom and your mother is angry.

You want to go on holiday but you can’t afford it.

Про­верь­те себя:

I wish I could find my passport.

I wish I lived in the city centre.

If only I hadn’t argued with her yesterday!

If only I had cleaned my bedroom!
